In 'pseudo-tram' guided bus mode tractive effort is via the rubber tyres, with guidance coming from double-flanged rollers which follow a central rail located flush in the roadway. This allows for sharing roadspace with the other traffic or operating along a traffic-free town centre with pedestrians.
Theoretically the single rail makes the GLT a part-time monorail! In bus mode the GLT will behave like any other road vehicle, driven from the front and able to roam freely as required.
When operating in this way the GLT will be able to emulate the cost effective advantages also enjoyed by conventional rail systems for one member of staff to operate trains carrying several hundreds of passengers at a time. In three more vehicles were built to further evaluate the technologies involved.
